Water on three sides

South of Fifth, also known as SoFi, is the part of South Beach that runs from South Pointe Park north to Fifth Street. The Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay surround it on three sides, and its ZIP code is 33139.

South Pointe is the southernmost point of South Beach. It borders Government Cut to the south and the Port of Miami to the east-northeast, and looks out over Biscayne Bay, Fisher Island, Downtown Miami and the ocean. Government Cut, the man-made shipping channel between Miami Beach and Fisher Island, opened in 1905; the U.S. government authorized it, hence the name.

The buildings

The condominium buildings named in the neighborhood include Glass House, Portofino Tower, Apogee South Beach, Icon, Murano Grande, Murano at Portofino, Continuum Towers, Ocean House, South Pointe Tower and the Yacht Club at Portofino.

Portofino Tower, at the southern extremity of Miami Beach overlooking Government Cut, opened in 1997 and stands 484 feet over 44 floors.

The blocks from 1st Street through 6th Street form the Ocean Beach Historic District, a Miami Beach local historic district designated in 1996. Joe’s Stone Crab, which sits in the same area as South Pointe Park, was designated a Miami Beach historic landmark in 1975.

The park and the street grid

South Pointe Park covers 17 acres. It opened on October 25, 1985, and a redesign by Hargreaves Associates was completed around March 2009. Its features include a restaurant, a dog park and outdoor showers. Washington Park is a few blocks north, at Washington Avenue and 2nd Street.

The east-west streets of South Beach start here, at Biscayne Street, now popularly known as South Pointe Drive, one block south of First Street.
